Butte's tall buildings and mining headframes stand as monuments to a time at the the turn of the 19th century when a frontier mining camp grew into one of the most sophisticated cities of the west; back then it was known as the 'Richest Hill on Earth'.

It was refreshing to find so many of the 19th century buildings actively in use, and encouraging to learn that, as yet, the Big Box stores have not discovered Butte.  I hope it stays that way, although I have serious doubts - when we visited the little animal 'hospital' to pick up some dog food for Dexter, the girl quite enthusiastically explained that the town would soon have its very own Petco.  She seemed to have no understanding of how the national chain will cannibalize her cute little business!
